On the first Sunday of each month, the American Museum of Science and Energy will open its doors to Knox County students for $0.01*. Tour AMSE’s permanent exhibit galleries; The Story of Oak Ridge, Exploration Station, The World of the Atom,Y-12 and National Defense, Earth Energy Resources, and The Flattop, explore its temporary exhibits, experience the hair raising demonstration Atoms & Atom Smashers, and more. *All children ages 5-15 must be accompanied by a paying adult (age 18 and older) in a ratio not to exceed three children per one adult.  Proof of Knox County residency (driver's license) will be required for each adult accompanying children ages 5-15.

(Ed. Note: Deadline to register is coming up fast, esp for kids older than 4 -- tball league might have a longer registration period, but call them to find out. My son played in this league and it was great! My daughter will be doing t-ball for the first time this season! Fun!!!)

Knox Youth Sports (KYS) baseball is a recreational baseball program created to develop the skills of boys and girls ages 3 to 14. Our program has mandatory playing time for all players. The emphasis at KYS is not winning but getting better at individual and team skills each and every practice and game. Most games are held at Lakeshore Park. Baseball is offered in both the spring and the fall. Middle school teams are welcome in the spring.

Come play in some clay!  Go on a scavenger hunt to find pottery in the museum and how the pieces were used.  Learn two clay building techniques, then hand-build vase/pot and a sculpture.  After you have your pieces completed, paint some glaze on them.  Brownies can earn your pottery badge in a day by choosing a date from the list below.

Home School Pottery
This class provides an experience to work with clay and be creative. Practice sculptural hand -building animals for the garden, hanging water bowl for birds, or a totem with fantasy creatures learn the basics of wheel- throwing while learning about the history of pottery. Gain a solid foundation of throwing techniques while creating bowls, pots, vases and more. Sculpture techniques, glazing and texturing will also be covered. Personal expression is encouraged.
More specific programing can also be arranged as well as different dates and times.

Hand Building and Wheel Throwing for Adults
Participants are exposed to a wide variety of methods for creating both functional as well as sculptural clay pieces. All levels are welcome. Intermediate and more advanced students will learn new techniques and improve skills through the use of the potter's wheel, extruder, and various hand building methods. Surface decoration and glazing techniques will also be explored.

Supermud Tiny Potters
In this one-hour class, preschoolers will explore the possibilities of clay by pushing, pinching, rolling, squishing and playing with clay. Children build skills as well as clay works of art in this unique sensory experience. Every session is loads of messy fun.

KSO Very Young People's Concerts: Shall We DanceThe Very Young People’s Concerts are created specifically for preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade students. The program Shall We Dance explores all types of dance music with the help of Maestro Lucas Richman and the KSO’s animated friend, Picardy Penguin. Picardy will guide the students in the basics of dancing a waltz in Richard Rodgers’ “Shall We Dance” from The King and I. Maestro Richman’s own Variations at the Barre will accompany different ballet techniques performed on stage and will introduce Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake. The Maestro will lead us on a trip to South America for some Argentinean Tango with Astor Piazolla and then to Bohemia for Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances. The program will also feature a tap routine and even the familiar Hokey-Pokey. Join us for this fun exploration of music & dance!
